Resolution on AIDS

The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum:

Concerned over the rising incidence of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) all over the world;

Mindful that AIDS is a health problem with enormous repercussions on the societal structure, economy and political stability of the international community;

Noting that the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) has recently infected some 14 million men, women and children of whom more than 2.5 million have developed AIDS, and numbers are projected to double by the year 2000;

Realizing that the number of people afflicted with AIDS can be reduced through measures taken by individuals, families, communities and governments;

Convinced that at present the most effective deterrent against the spread of AIDS is public education:

Resolves to:

Urge APPF Governments to conduct extensive information dissemination campaigns on the dangers of AIDS and measures that prevent the spread of the disease;

Reiterate the call on APPF member countries to undertake joint efforts to assess, evaluate and improve effectiveness of the various programs and activities aimed at curbing HIV/AIDS;

Encourage community leaders to support wider HIV/AIDS infection prevention programs in their communities; and

Call upon APPF member countries to care humanely for all people with HIV and AIDS.
