Resolution on Cooperation in the Sharing of natural Resources and Environmental Conservation

The Fourth Annual Meeting of the Asia Pacific Parliamentary Forum:

Recognizing the need to conserve and protect the environment and natural resources to ensure the survival of the succeeding generations:

Realizing that a wholesome environment is necessary for the health and well-being of the planet and all its peoples;

Affirming that individuals, families, and communities play a central role in conserving and protecting the environmental and natural resources;

Recognizing the economic and technical limitation of the developing countries in the region and their need to be assisted by the developed countries and multilateral institutions in upgrading their capabilities in addressing environmental problems;

Noting that the world environment and natural resources can be properly safeguarded and conserved if every state cooperates in the proper utilization, management and disposition of natural resources;

Affirming the belief that every country should be committed to improving the environment and conserving natural resources;

Reiterating the continued support of the APPF to the outcome of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992;

Resolves to:

Urge APPF member countries to play an active part in protecting the environment by continuing to cooperate in promoting sustainable development;

Call on all countries to actively participate in the international exchange of information, experiences and strategies including the imminent Special UN General Assembly on Environment in order to cope with environmental problems more effectively;

Recommend that the APPF member countries, consistent with their respective legal frameworks, move to ensure greater participation of families and communities in conserving natural resources and protecting the environment;

Call on the developed countries and multilateral institutions to further assist developing countries in addressing environmental problems.
